Livestock: A Vital Partner for IL Corn
Livestock is a top customer for Illinois corn, which is why IL Corn supports programs that grow and strengthen the livestock industry. Through partnerships and investments like the Illinois Livestock Development Group, U.S. Meat Export Federation, USAPEEC and local pork and beef promotion—we’re helping expand markets, boost demand, and build a stronger future for livestock and corn.
How does the livestock industry affect corn prices for farmers?
A significant portion of Illinois corn goes into animal feed, meaning that a healthy demand for livestock generally shifts corn prices higher. However, when corn is expensive, it's more difficult for livestock producers to remain profitable. As a result, they often shift to cheaper alternatives rather than traditional corn, which eventually shifts market prices downwards.
How much corn grown in Illinois is actually used for livestock feed?
127 million bushels, or 6% of corn grown in Illinois, is used to feed livestock within the state. However, an additional 27% of the state's corn is used towards ethanol production, which produces millions of co-products (like DDGs) back into the food chain. Also some corn that's exported out of the state goes to feeding livestock in other states and the world.
What resources exist for Illinois corn farmers wanting to diversify into livestock production?
Farmers looking into livestock integration have many resources available, including the Illinois Grazing and Forage Hub, Illinois Livestock Development Group, Diverse Cornbelt Project, and Illinois FarmLink
