Farmers planning to buy seed for the 2011 growing year should consider utilizing all the resources provided by the National Corn Growers Association to ensure that they are well prepared to sell into a global marketplace and to plant within refuge guidelines, says Illinois Corn Growers Association President, Jim Reed.

“Refuge requirements are so important to maintaining the integrity of the technology we have available.  With varying requirements for refuge depending on the product you are using, NCGA’s IRM Refuge Calculator can be an invaluable resource as seed purchasing decisions are being made this winter,” Reed said.

The Insect Resistance Management Refuge Calculator  is a tool intended to illustrate the appropriate refuge calculation, the quantity of standard seed bags to purchase for both trait and refuge, and possible planting configurations for planting certain corn products in the U.S.  It is not a replacement or supplement to the applicable manufacturer’s IRM Grower Guide.

You can download the calculator by clicking here and clicking on the “download PC” or “download Mac” buttons, depending on the type of computer you are using.

ICGA urges Illinois corn farmers to plant the appropriate refuge for each and every product they plan to grow. Respect the refuge!

Also available online is NCGA’s Know Before you Grow guide which is designed to help a farmer plan his crop with full knowledge of what is and isn’t approved for export to the EU and to Japan.
