On Monday, June 20, Congressman Adam Kinzinger visited with Illinois Corn Executive Director, Rodney Weinzierl and Legislative Intern, Kaity Spangler on a variety of issues concerning not only his constituents, but Illinois Corn and its members. Trading with Cuba, the Renewable Fuel Standard, GM Labeling, and the upcoming Presidential Election were main topics of conversations.

Kinzinger was very interested on the issue of Genetically Modified food labeling. “I just don’t get it,” he said. “I eat healthy, and try to buy the ‘right’ food, but people keep saying that they want our food to go back to the way it was hundreds of years ago. Well, hundreds of years ago, people were living to be 55 and now they’re living to be 90. Obviously we’re doing something right.” He was unsure what would happen in the coming weeks with the July 1 deadline approaching. Weinzierl added that because of a lack of a federal law, food companies have been forced to comply with the Vermont regulations. “They held off as long as they could,” he said. “But without a federal law in place, they have to comply.”

The conversation may have been short, but it was beneficial. “I’m an American before I’m a Republican,” stated Congressman Kinzinger towards the end of the visit, making it very clear that he is dedicated to his constituents and Illinois Corn.
