For years (and years, and years, and years) we have asked for the funds to modernize our inland waterway transportation system.  For years, our government has failed to appropriate the funds that would allow us to keep up with the rest of the world.  For years, the United States has been falling behind in global competitiveness. 

For Operations & Maintenance alone, the expenses will amount to more than 8 times the revenue that is currently collected from commercial carriers.  

All the while, the rest of the world is moving ahead of the United States.  Some countries are spending more than three times on infrastructure projects.

Our nation's waterways Keep America Moving, provide family-wage American jobs, support exports, and protect the environment. They relieve traffic congestion, are the most energy-efficient mode of surface transportation, and are vital to our agriculture, manufacturing and energy sectors.
