As Illinois continues to work its way toward economic recovery, rural leaders can learn from those communities that have developed successful strategies. The 22nd Annual Rural Community Economic Development Conference brings together nationally recognized speakers and practitioners who have been successful in creating prosperity and enhancing quality of life in rural areas. More than 16 sessions will be offered concurrently, presenting strategies that rural leaders can adapt in their own communities and regions.

The opening session will feature a presentation by Lt. Governor Sheila Simon, chair of the Governor’s Rural Affairs Council, as well as presentations on building entrepreneurial communities and the role of sustainability in community development. Breakout sessions will address sessions on entrepreneurship, developing youth leadership, broadband and rural development, and examples of rural Illinois communities that are thriving in today’s economy.

Sessions on web technology for rural areas, developing youth leaders within your community, and successful tourism in small towns might be of particular interest to Illinois Corn membership.  And if you plan to participate, don’t forget to use an opportunity just like this to network with non-farm folks that might not already know your family farming story.
