The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released today their 2018 proposed rule for the renewable volume obligation number (RVO). The RVO dictates how many gallons of renewable fuels, and of what type, must be blended into our nation’s fuel supply in a year. IL Corn is pleased to see that under Administrator Pruitt’s leadership, EPA has returned to the statutory level of corn-based ethanol of 15 billion gallons. Overall, EPA has backed down on the RVO numbers, a move that we hope doesn’t indicate a general movement away from cleaner, renewable fuels.

  • EPA’s numbers have corn-based conventional ethanol at 15 billion gallons.
  • Biodiesel is proposed at 2.1 billion gallons, up slightly from last year.
  • Cellulosic biofuel took the hardest hit, dropping to a proposed 238 million gallons, down from 311 in 2017.
  • Advanced biofuels are down 40 million gallons to 4.24 billion gallons.
