You might remember that Illinois corn farmers praised Congressman Shimkus for his introduction of House Bill 1687, The Open Fuel Standard Act. The proposed bill would require that 50% of new automobiles in 2014, 80% in 2016, and 95% in 2017, be able to operate on nonpetroleum fuels in addition to or instead of petroleum based fuels.

Add another round of applause to the equation.

Robert Zubrin, renowned engineer and author of Energy Victory, offers a quick summary of the two approaches to fuel choice in his latest article, saying, “The NAT GAS Act would cost the treasury a fortune, while accomplishing next to nothing. The Open Fuel Standard bill would cost the treasury nothing, while protecting both the U.S. and world economies from continued taxation by the oil cartel.”
